FAQ

Why use a tapestry and not a painting?

Our homes need decoration to personalise them and on the larger plain wall areas which are becoming the norm in most modern homes, smaller paintings or art works are often not big enough to be a feature.

Hard flooring and lack of soft furnishings can make a home very noisy. The larger tapestry can help considerably to balance out the acoustics.

I’m not into traditional furniture or antiques and have a contemporary home.

There are a huge variety of styles to suit all interests; some of the latest styles are based on ancient art which can appear contemporary. Our customers are also mixing the very early tapestry styles with modern leather, glass and chrome to give an eclectic mix to interior style. Check out some of the room settings we have online to see tapestries used in different ways.

Are tapestries expensive?

We have tapestries to suit all budgets. Many of them are also scaled down in size to that of a 50x50cm cushion. We also have in stock cushions of all sizes, many are designs taken from parts of tapestries, and additionally we have a varied selection of modern styles. These are a constantly changing range-and are available only ex our showroom in Warkworth. A large range of quality Belgian table runners and table cloths are also available, prices ranging from $15.

I don’t want anything too big

Our tapestries range from 50cms x 50 cms to over 3 metres. However, scale is a consideration when choosing a tapestry. Small ‘busy’ designs suit smaller spaces and some of the larger tapestries will be more appropriate for large surfaces. The larger tapestries also suit curved walls or stair wells which feature in many new homes.

How do I hang a tapestry, do I have to frame it?

Framing is not necessary. All our tapestries are lined, with a sleeve at the top to enable hanging. Most curtain poles will fit through the sleeve and can be fitted onto a bracket at each end. For smaller tapestries, screw-eye hooks in the end of a wooden batten will simply rest on a picture hook. The sleeve is recessed so that the pole can be completely hidden from view. However if you wish to make a feature of a pole with finials at each end you would do so by using a longer rod.

How do I clean my tapestry?

Tapestries do not need regular cleaning, a light shake to get rid of dust should be sufficient when you dust your curtains, or you can give it a very light vacuum when necessary. In the event of smoke or other smells becoming a problem, normal professional dry cleaning would be recommended. Before hanging for the first time, we would suggest laying the tapestry on the floor over a blanket or on carpet and ironing it flat with a normal steam iron to get rid of any creases incurred during shipping.

My tapestry is not exactly square and does not measure up exactly to the shown size.

After removal from the loom, a woven piece needs time to ‘settle’ and when the backing is sewn on; the machinist often has to follow the lines of a border or pattern. At first appearance the tapestry may not look perfectly square- again use a steam iron on the front of the tapestry- starting in the centre and ironing from the middle outwards. You may notice some of the suppliers use a very light lining that looks a little wrinkly on the back-that is to allow the heavier tapestry front to move and settle once it is on the wall.

My tapestry has a curl in it what do I do?

Visitors (and sometimes our customers do this too!) cannot resist turning over the tapestry corner to see what is on the back, and often the tapestry will not lay flat after this. Just try smoothing it back down by hand- it is a fabric and that should be enough. Adding weights to the bottom corners is not recommended as it will distort the weave in time. Areas with high humidity will also cause the tapestry to ‘wave’ a bit like a curtain and again taking it off the wall and a light steam ironing (followed by a rest time on the floor) then rehanging –this will freshen it again.

Will my tapestry fade?

Although the manufacturers use the best yarns and colourfast dyes, textiles are all affected by the UV. Some countries have a higher UV than others, so do not hang in direct sun or where there is a lot of reflected sunlight. Applying a UV blocking film to the window glass is the best way to avoid fading . Protect your tapestry as you would your other soft furnishings.
However some customers like the aged look and look forward to some fading to add to the enjoyment of their purchase.
