Visiting Wilson House is a special experience. A short drive down a winding road between old Kauri trees, the house is set in a peaceful valley close to the picturesque village of Warkworth. Built in the Italianate style in 1904, it was the first reinforced concrete house built in New Zealand using Portland cement manufactured at the former Wilson's cement plant close by.
When the Wilson Company's original manufacturing plant was closed in 1926 all the Wilson family and workers moved away from the area. After the great depression, WW2 and many years of neglect, the house was finally abandoned in the mid 1960's and left to further deteriorate until 1980, when the restoration project began.
Fully restored, Wilson House now operates as both a retail gallery for Tapestry Décor and a boutique B&B. The extensive gardens have been restored and are enjoyed by our guests. The library is for guest use, and a short walk to the river to see the ruins may be necessary after our full breakfast! Breakfast is enjoyed on the terrace during the summer months or otherwise in the morning room.
Warkworth is the heart of the Matakana Wine Country, with a number of vineyards open daily to taste the local ‘drop'! The extensive coastline close by offers a number of experiences from cafes, restaurants, galleries, horse riding on the beach, glass bottom boat trips, swimming, fishing etc. - something for everyone!
